MA English Language/German
About this course
English Language and German is a degree that brings together the scientific study of language with the deep immersion in a specific language and culture that German provides. English language and linguistics investigates how the English language works: its grammar and structure, its history of change, the variation between different varieties and dialects, and the role of language in constructing social identities. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe, the language of a major economy and of an extraordinarily rich intellectual and artistic tradition in literature, philosophy and music. At the University of Glasgow, the five-year full-time MA programme develops your theoretical understanding of English language and linguistics alongside your proficiency in German language and culture. You will study the structure of English, its history from Old English to the present, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and the study of language in social and political contexts. The German component takes your language skills progressively towards a high level of proficiency while also engaging with German literature, film and intellectual history. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in a German-language or English language professional context. Glasgow's strong linguistics and modern languages departments provide a rigorous and stimulating environment for this kind of dual-discipline study. Graduates work in journalism, language teaching, translation and interpreting, speech therapy, the civil service, international business, German-language broadcasting and publishing, and educational research. Postgraduate study in linguistics, German studies, translation, speech and language therapy or education is a natural continuation.
