About this course
English language and mathematics may appear to occupy opposite ends of the academic spectrum, but they share a common preoccupation with structure, meaning and the formal systems through which we make sense of the world. English language study, particularly in its linguistic dimension, involves the rigorous analysis of how language is structured, how it functions in communication, how it varies across communities and how it has changed over time. Mathematics develops abstract reasoning, proof and the ability to work with precise formal systems. Together they cultivate complementary habits of mind: the linguistic strand sharpens your sensitivity to meaning and context, the mathematical strand your capacity for rigorous logical argument. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting the university's commitment to developing intellectually flexible graduates with an international perspective. You will study the phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics of English, alongside sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and the analysis of language in use across social and digital contexts. The mathematics component takes you into pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics, developing proof-writing, problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills progressively across the four years. Both disciplines develop your capacity for careful analysis, precise expression and independent investigation. Research methods appropriate to both fields are taught, and the combination trains you to be comfortable with both qualitative and quantitative evidence. Graduates go on to careers in education, where the combination of linguistic and mathematical expertise is particularly well suited to teaching at secondary level. Others go into data analysis, natural language processing, linguistics research, publishing, communications and the civil service. Postgraduate study in linguistics, mathematics, computational linguistics, education or related fields is a common route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
