BA English Literature
About this course
English literature is the study of how imaginative writing in English has reflected, shaped, and challenged human experience across centuries and across the world. It demands the ability to read carefully and attentively, to understand how meaning is constructed through language and form, and to situate texts within the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts that produced them. At its best, the discipline develops habits of mind that are as valuable outside university as within it: the capacity to read critically, to think from multiple perspectives, and to communicate complex ideas with precision. This three-year, full-time programme at the University of the West of England takes a distinctive approach, exploring fiction's impact on the world and engaging with literature's contribution to urgent contemporary and global debates. You will study across periods and genres, developing expertise in literary history and criticism alongside the analytical tools to bring literary reading to questions that matter in the present. The programme includes a placement year and a year abroad, both of which give you significant opportunities to develop professionally and internationally, connecting your literary education to real-world contexts and to literary and cultural traditions beyond the UK. English literature graduates are found across an exceptionally wide range of careers. Publishing, journalism, education, broadcasting, law, the civil service, the cultural sector, and marketing and communications are all frequent destinations, as are roles in policy, advocacy, and the broader creative industries. The skills of close reading, rigorous argument, and clear writing that the degree develops are valued wherever complex communication is needed. The placement year and year abroad add professional and international dimensions that many employers in competitive fields actively look for. Further postgraduate study in literature, creative writing, or related humanities disciplines is a common route for those who wish to pursue academic careers.
