About this course

English literature and film and television studies is a combination that explores two of the most powerful forms in which human beings tell stories and make sense of their experience. English literature develops the ability to read with precision and depth, to understand how meaning is constructed through language and form, and to situate texts within their historical and cultural contexts across a wide range of periods and traditions. Film and television studies extends those critical tools to moving image media, examining how cinematic and televisual forms communicate, represent, and shape our understanding of the world. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Glasgow leads to a Master of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with literary and screen cultures in a different national and academic setting. You will explore literature in English from early modern to postmodern, benefiting from Glasgow's particular strengths in American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and the relationship between literature and the other arts and media. The film and television element develops your understanding of screen language, genre, national cinemas, and the theoretical frameworks used to analyse moving image culture. Graduates pursue careers across the cultural sector, education, media, and the creative industries. Journalism, broadcasting, literary criticism, teaching, publishing, arts administration, and content creation are common destinations. The combination of literary and screen media literacy that Glasgow's programme develops is particularly valuable in roles that involve engaging multiple textual and visual traditions. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in English, film studies, or media, pursuing academic careers or specialist professional expertise in areas such as archiving, curation, or screen education.
