MA Film & Television Studies/ Spanish
About this course
Film and television studies combined with Spanish offers an intellectually rich pairing, bringing together the analytical tools of screen studies with direct linguistic and cultural access to one of the world's most cinematically significant traditions. Spanish-language cinema and television have produced some of the most celebrated and challenging works in global screen culture, from the surrealism of Buñuel to the contemporary work of Almodóvar and the global reach of Spanish-language streaming content, and studying them in their original language with the cultural context that Spanish studies provides gives your engagement with them a depth that subtitles alone cannot supply. At Glasgow, whose film and television studies lecturers are leading researchers in their field, this five-year full-time programme gives you genuine expertise in both disciplines. You will engage with national and international film and television cultures, theory, history, and cultural policy, with contributions from policymakers and screen practitioners enriching the academic curriculum. Your Spanish studies develop linguistic competence and cultural understanding through literature, film, history, and contemporary society, running in parallel with your screen studies throughout the programme. The degree includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in a creative or cultural industry context. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects Glasgow's academic expectations. Graduates go on to careers in film and television production, criticism, broadcasting, cultural journalism, arts administration, education, and a wide range of roles in the Spanish-speaking and wider creative industries. The combination of media literacy and Spanish-language fluency is valued in international co-production, cultural diplomacy, and journalism, as well as in the growing Spanish-language media market. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in film studies, Spanish, or media studies.
