BA Film, TV and Digital Media with Year Abroad
About this course
Film, television and digital media are not simply entertainment; they are the primary means through which contemporary societies construct and share meaning, identity, culture and memory. Understanding these media, how they are made, how they work on their audiences, and how they have evolved across different national and technological contexts, is to understand something fundamental about how the modern world functions. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time degree combines critical and historical engagement with film and television with an understanding of how digital media is transforming the broader media landscape. You will study the history, theory and practice of film and television, engaging with a wide range of national cinemas and broadcasting traditions, and developing the analytical frameworks needed to read moving image media with sophistication. You will also examine how digital technologies have changed the production, distribution and consumption of media, and what this means for questions of authorship, industry, and culture. The programme includes the opportunity to spend time abroad at a partner institution, enriching your perspective on how media industries and cultures differ across national contexts and broadening your experience of the discipline in an international setting. Graduates of film, television and digital media programmes move into a wide range of careers in the creative and media industries, including roles in production, broadcasting, distribution, programming, journalism, media criticism, digital content, and arts administration. Many also work in education, cultural institutions, and the public sector. Others pursue postgraduate study in media, film studies, digital humanities, or related fields, some developing academic or research careers. The critical and analytical skills you develop are transferable across a wide range of professional contexts beyond the media industries themselves.
