BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine art is the practice of making work that uses visual and material form to explore ideas, experiences, and perceptions, engaging viewers and provoking thought about the world and our place within it. It encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance, and hybrid forms that challenge and extend the boundaries of each. What distinguishes fine art from applied visual disciplines is the primacy of the artist's own questions and concerns, and the openness of the work to multiple interpretations rather than a single communicative purpose. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year full-time programme builds your confidence in fine art practice and develops a range of transferable professional skills to support your future in the creative industries and beyond. You will work in a richly equipped studio environment, with access to workshops for painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and digital media, developing your practice through sustained creative exploration, regular tutorials, and critical engagement with your own work and that of your peers. Art history and critical theory are integrated throughout, developing the conceptual and contextual understanding that allows you to situate your practice within the broader landscape of contemporary art. Graduates from fine art programmes pursue careers as practising artists, as well as in gallery and museum work, arts administration, community arts, art therapy, arts education, film and television production design, and the creative industries. Many develop a portfolio career that combines studio practice with other professional activities. Further study at postgraduate level in fine art, curating, visual art education, or art therapy is available for those who wish to deepen their practice or move into specialist roles.
