BA Fine Art with Contemporary Cultural Theory
About this course
Fine art with contemporary cultural theory is a programme that brings practical studio-based art practice into sustained dialogue with critical and theoretical thinking. Fine art develops your capacity to make work that is aesthetically and conceptually ambitious, to develop an independent artistic voice, and to situate your practice within contemporary debates about what art is, what it does, and who it is for. Contemporary cultural theory provides the intellectual tools to analyse and interpret cultural production across a wide range of forms and contexts, drawing on philosophy, sociology, literature, film studies, and digital humanities. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time degree enables you to develop an independent art practice alongside skills in cultural theory and critical analysis. You will be supported to approach art as a way of critically thinking through and intervening in the contemporary world, exploring cultural production and practices in national, transnational, and global contexts. The theoretical component draws on a genuinely interdisciplinary range of perspectives, and the studio practice is informed by that critical intelligence in ways that make both more rigorous. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you professional experience across the arts and cultural sector and the opportunity to engage with art and theory in international contexts. Graduates from fine art with cultural theory programmes pursue careers across the visual arts and cultural sectors. Practising artists, curators, arts administrators, arts journalists and critics, gallery educators, arts fundraisers, cultural policy practitioners, and roles in the heritage sector are all common destinations. The critical thinking and research skills developed through the cultural theory component are also valued in education, publishing, and roles in the public and voluntary sectors that require sophisticated analytical and communication abilities. Postgraduate study in fine art, curating, cultural studies, or arts education is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
