Forensic chemistry applies the principles and techniques of chemistry to the investigation of crime and other legal matters. It sits at the intersection of analytical chemistry, toxicology, and the criminal justice system, and it plays a crucial role in modern forensic science: detecting and identifying controlled substances, analysing trace evidence including fibres, paint, and glass, investigating arson and explosives, and providing expert scientific testimony that can be decisive in legal proceedings. The discipline requires both strong chemical knowledge and an understanding of how scientific evidence functions within the legal context. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year, full-time programme develops your chemistry skills with a specific and sustained focus on forensic applications. You will study organic and inorganic chemistry, analytical techniques, spectroscopy, and toxicology alongside forensic science methodology and the legal and procedural frameworks within which forensic scientists work. Laboratory work is central to the programme, and you will develop practical skills in the techniques used to collect, preserve, analyse, and report on physical evidence. You will also learn to understand how scientific findings are communicated to non-scientific audiences, including in court, which is a specific and important skill that forensic scientists need. Graduates in forensic chemistry go on to careers in forensic science services, police forensic laboratories, defence and prosecution forensic support, toxicology, environmental monitoring, and related analytical roles in the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries.
