BA Game Design and Development
About this course
Game design and development is the discipline concerned with creating video games from initial concept through to a finished, playable product. It encompasses game design theory, narrative and level design, programming, 2D and 3D art, sound, and the production processes through which these elements are brought together into a coherent and engaging player experience. The games industry is one of the largest entertainment industries in the world, and continues to grow as new platforms, technologies, and player communities create demand for diverse creative content. At London South Bank University, this three-year full-time programme develops your abilities across both the design and development dimensions of games creation. You will learn to design game mechanics, levels, and systems, to implement those designs through programming and scripting, and to create or integrate the visual and audio assets that bring a game to life. You will also learn how to release and promote games, which is increasingly important for developers working in independent and self-publishing contexts as well as within studios. LSBU's London location provides proximity to the UK's significant games industry, with studios, publishers, and events that support industry awareness and networking. Graduates work in the games industry as game designers, level designers, programmers, and generalist developers across mobile, indie, console, and PC game production. The combination of design and development skills makes graduates versatile in smaller teams and studios, where the ability to work across multiple disciplines is particularly valued. The wider creative technology sector, including interactive media, simulation, virtual reality, and gamification, also employs graduates whose skills transfer readily. Further study in games development, computer science, or interactive design is open to those who wish to specialise.
