About this course

Geography is the discipline that sits uniquely at the boundary of the physical and human worlds, asking how the forces of nature and the actions of societies interact to produce the landscapes, environments and spatial patterns we inhabit. Physical geography investigates the processes that shape the Earth's surface, including rivers, coasts, glaciers and atmospheric systems. Human geography examines how people organise space, how cities and regions develop, how cultures and economies are distributed and how communities respond to environmental change. The discipline's breadth is one of its greatest strengths, and geographers are trained to think across scales and to engage with some of the most pressing challenges of the present day. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you extensive practical and international experience alongside your academic study. The programme is broad-based and highly flexible, addressing key themes of natural hazards, climate change and sustainability throughout. You can select modules from both physical and human geography, developing your professional skills through teaching and work placement modules and customising your learning to match your interests and career direction. This flexibility allows you to build a genuinely personalised geographical education. Geography graduates are consistently sought after by employers across a wide range of sectors. The combination of analytical, fieldwork and communication skills that geography develops is valued in environmental consultancy, planning, international development, research, the public sector, business and the media. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in physical geography, human geography, environmental science, urban planning or international development, and the combination of subject knowledge and transferable skills gives geography graduates a genuinely broad range of options.
