BSc Geography with a Language
About this course
Geography is one of the few academic disciplines that bridges the natural and human worlds, integrating the study of physical environments, landscapes, and climate with the examination of how human societies are organised, how they use and transform the environments they inhabit, and how those environments in turn shape social, economic, and political life. Geography with a language adds a second dimension: the opportunity to develop genuine linguistic and cultural competence in another language, enabling you to engage with different national and regional contexts with the depth that language access provides. At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year programme includes the opportunity to study abroad for one year, supported by enhanced language teaching throughout the degree. You will take core geography modules alongside thematic options drawn from across human and physical geography, developing a flexible and wide-ranging understanding of the major global, regional, and local processes that shape our world. The language component provides genuine communicative training alongside cultural and contextual understanding, and the year abroad integrates language immersion with academic study in a way that develops both skills together. Graduates with geography and a language are particularly well placed for careers with an international or environmental dimension. Environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, international development, teaching, research, government environmental agencies, tourism, logistics, and international business roles are all common destinations. The language competence you add to your geographical training is especially valuable in organisations working across borders or in the regions where your language is spoken. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, international relations, or further language and area studies.
