BA Graphic Communication
About this course
Graphic communication is the discipline through which ideas, information and messages are shaped into visual form for audiences of all kinds. It encompasses graphic design, typography, illustration, motion design, interaction design and image-making, addressing both the technical craft of visual production and the conceptual thinking that makes design effective rather than merely attractive. In a world saturated with visual content across print, screen and physical environments, the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly through design is a skill of genuine value. At the University of Southampton you will study for three years full-time, developing expertise and knowledge for a professional career in graphic communication. You will build core design skills in graphic design, typography, motion, interaction design, illustration and image-based practices, gaining fluency across both traditional and digital media. The programme gives you the option to specialise in a particular area or to maintain the breadth of an interdisciplinary design practice, depending on your interests and professional ambitions. You will also have the opportunity to experiment with emerging and cutting-edge technological platforms, ensuring your practice stays relevant to the fast-changing media landscape. Graduates in graphic communication work as graphic designers, brand designers, typographers, illustrators, motion graphics designers, UX and interaction designers, art directors and creative directors across agencies, in-house design teams, broadcasting, publishing, advertising and the digital product sector. Many graduates also develop freelance or self-directed creative practices, using the portfolio and professional skills built during the degree to work with a range of clients and contexts. Postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, interaction design or design research is a natural progression for those who want to develop a more specialist or academically informed practice.
