BSc Human Biology and Sport & Exercise Science
About this course
Human biology and sport and exercise science is a combination that approaches the human body from two complementary angles. Human biology examines the structure and function of the body, the mechanisms of disease, and how human beings adapt and interact with their environments at a biological level. Sport and exercise science applies this biological understanding to physical performance, asking how exercise affects the body's systems, how training improves performance, and what role physical activity plays in health and disease prevention. Together they provide a rich scientific foundation for understanding human physical capacity and its limits. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme is structured as a combined honours degree, with the curriculum drawing on both fields throughout. You will cover topics in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and cell biology alongside the core disciplines of sport science, including exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, and performance analysis. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing a substantial set of professional and international experiences before you graduate. Liverpool Hope's values-centred ethos informs the programme's approach to both the biological and the performance dimensions of the degree. The breadth of the combination means you develop both the scientific rigour of a biology graduate and the applied professional understanding of a sport scientist, which makes you versatile in the graduate job market. Graduates are well placed for careers in sport science, personal training, strength and conditioning, health promotion, clinical exercise physiology, and sports medicine support roles. Many also go on to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, nutrition, or biomedical science.
