About this course

International politics and Spanish together make a highly purposeful combination for anyone interested in global affairs, diplomacy, or working in organisations that operate across national and linguistic boundaries. International politics asks how power is structured and exercised between states and non-state actors, what drives conflict and cooperation, and how international institutions and norms shape the behaviour of governments. Spanish is one of the world's most widely spoken languages, the language of diplomacy across Latin America as well as the Iberian Peninsula, and a major asset in any internationally oriented career. At the University of Bath this four-year full-time programme develops both strands in depth alongside each other. You will study international relations theory, foreign policy, global governance, security studies, and comparative politics, developing the analytical frameworks to understand how the international system works and to think critically about it. The Spanish strand develops your linguistic ability from its current level through to a high level of communicative and academic proficiency, alongside engagement with the literature, history, and politics of Spanish-speaking countries. The sandwich year, which includes a work placement, gives you substantial professional experience in a relevant environment before you complete the degree. Bath's strong research culture and industry links mean the programme is both academically rigorous and practically oriented. Graduates go on to careers in international organisations, diplomacy, the civil service, journalism, think tanks, development work, NGOs, business operating in Spanish-speaking markets, and law. The combination of political analysis and Spanish language ability is a genuine advantage in many of these contexts, and the placement year adds practical experience that employers value.
