About this course

International tourism management is concerned with one of the world's largest and most complex industries. Tourism connects peoples and places across the globe, generates significant economic activity in both wealthy and developing regions, and raises profound questions about sustainability, cultural exchange, and the rights of host communities. Managing it responsibly and effectively requires both business acumen and a genuine understanding of the social, environmental, and cultural dimensions of how and why people travel. At the University of Plymouth, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of tourism from multiple disciplinary perspectives. You will explore the roles that tourism plays within and for societies, examining the impacts of tourist activity and the behaviour of tourists, drawing on concepts from sociology, anthropology, leisure studies, and management. International case studies provide grounding in how tourism operates across different cultural and regulatory environments, developing your critical awareness of the relationship between tourism and society. The business and management dimensions of the programme equip you with practical knowledge of how tourism enterprises and destinations are planned, marketed, and operated, including the strategic challenges posed by sustainability, seasonality, and changing demand. A sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in the tourism industry, a year abroad broadens your international perspective, and work placement experience is integrated throughout. You will graduate with both the academic and professional knowledge to contribute in an industry that is global in its reach and increasingly demanding in what it expects of its managers. Graduates go on to careers in destination management, hotel and hospitality management, travel operations, events management, sustainable tourism development, and the cultural and heritage sector. Many pursue postgraduate study in tourism management, hospitality, or related fields. The international orientation of the degree is particularly valued by employers in tourism organisations with a global reach.
