LLB Law
About this course
Law is the framework through which societies define rights, resolve disputes, and hold power to account. Studying it means engaging with some of the most fundamental questions about how communities organise themselves, what obligations people owe to one another, and how rules are made, applied, and contested. A law degree is intellectually demanding and practically orientated in equal measure, building the capacity for precise analysis, careful reasoning, and persuasive argument. At the University of Essex you will gain a thorough grounding in the core principles of English and international law, covering areas such as contract, tort, constitutional law, and criminal law. You will develop critical thinking, legal research, and professional reasoning skills throughout the three-year full-time programme. Essex has a strong tradition of engagement with human rights and international law, and the curriculum reflects the university's research strengths in those areas. You will learn to read case law and legislation with care, to identify the key issues within complex fact patterns, and to construct well-structured legal arguments both in writing and in advocacy contexts. Graduates leave with the academic foundation required to pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister, alongside a set of transferable skills that are valued across business, government, finance, and the public sector. Many Essex law graduates go on to complete the Legal Practice Course or Bar Practice Course, while others use their degree as a platform for careers in compliance, policy, journalism, human resources, or international organisations. Postgraduate study in law, international relations, or criminology is another path that Essex's research environment is well placed to support. Whether you intend to practise law or to apply legal reasoning in a different professional context, this degree gives you a rigorous and internationally aware training.
