LLB Law
About this course
Law is the system of rules, principles and institutions through which societies organise their affairs and resolve disputes. Studying it develops not just knowledge of the rules but the ability to reason with them critically: to understand where they came from, whom they serve, how they interact and how they might be changed. At its best, a law degree teaches you to read with precision, argue with rigour and write with clarity, skills that are valuable far beyond the legal profession itself. At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme teaches law critically, not merely as rules to be learned but as a system that shapes the world and can be shaped in return. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, land law and equity alongside elective modules that allow you to pursue particular interests within the law. Kent's approach encourages you to question the law's foundations, to examine the values embedded in legal rules and to think about law in its social and political context. This critical dimension distinguishes a Kent law degree from a purely vocational preparation, and it makes graduates who are equipped not just to work within legal systems but to understand them deeply. Graduates pursue careers as solicitors and barristers through the standard professional training routes, as well as in the Crown Prosecution Service, government legal service, local authority legal departments, NGOs, compliance, human resources, management and the civil service. The analytical, research and writing skills developed in a law degree are genuinely transferable across a wide range of professional settings. Further study at master's level in law, a specialist legal field, or a related social science is an option for those who want to deepen their expertise before entering the profession or pursuing academic careers.
