LLB Law with French Law
About this course
Law with French Law is an unusual and intellectually ambitious combination that opens two legal systems to you simultaneously. Scots law and French law belong to the same civilian legal family, both drawing on Roman law traditions that distinguish them from the common law system of England and Wales. Studying them together gives you a comparative legal perspective that is genuinely rare among UK law graduates, alongside the linguistic and cultural depth that comes from immersion in French legal thought. At Aberdeen Law School you will study this five-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad in France, allowing you to engage directly with the French legal system, to study French law in a French-language environment, and to build the language fluency and cultural understanding that make the comparative dimension of this degree meaningful rather than theoretical. Aberdeen's law school has a strong reputation for the breadth, depth and quality of its teaching, and for the individual attention it provides to students. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 200 UCAS points. You will study Scots and UK public law, private law, criminal law and jurisprudence alongside French civil law, French constitutional and administrative law, and the comparative analysis of both systems within their European and international contexts. Graduates of this dual-system programme are exceptionally well placed for legal careers with an international or European dimension. Solicitors' and advocates' firms with French or European clients, international organisations, multinational businesses, European Union institutions and comparative law research are all natural destinations. The combination of Scots law qualification potential, French legal knowledge and language ability is a genuinely distinctive credential in a legal market where international capability is increasingly valued. Postgraduate study in comparative law, European law, international commercial law or Franco-British legal practice is a natural further step.
