LLB Law with Modern Languages (German)
About this course
Law with Modern Languages is a combination designed for those who want to pursue a career in law while developing real linguistic competence in another European language. Law in the English tradition is a demanding and intellectually rigorous discipline, covering the core areas of contract, tort, land, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law that underpin professional legal practice, while also developing the analytical, argumentative, and written skills that make lawyers effective. German adds to this a language of major economic and political significance in Europe and beyond, spoken by over 90 million native speakers and central to Germany's position as one of the world's largest economies and a leading force in European law and governance. At Royal Holloway, University of London, this three-year full-time LLB degree develops your critical understanding of law alongside advanced linguistic proficiency in written and oral German. You will cover the core legal subjects required for a qualifying law degree while also studying German language at a high level and engaging with the cultural, legal, and political context of the German-speaking world. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to spend time in Germany or Austria, to immerse yourself in the language, and to develop the professional experience that international legal employers look for. Graduates in Law with German are particularly well placed for careers in legal practice with an international dimension. Many qualify as solicitors or barristers and work in firms with European or international practices, in areas including corporate law, EU law, competition law, and international arbitration. Others work in the civil service, the European institutions, international organisations, translation and interpreting, and the legal departments of multinational companies. Postgraduate study in law, European law, or a related field is a natural next step. The typical entry tariff is 120 points.
