BSc Mathematics with Statistics
About this course
Mathematics with statistics is a degree that gives you the full rigour of a mathematics education alongside the specific tools and methods that statistics brings to the problem of reasoning under uncertainty. Pure mathematics develops your capacity for abstract thought, proof, and the rigorous manipulation of mathematical structures. Applied mathematics connects those structures to the physical and computational world. Statistics provides the framework for drawing valid inferences from data, quantifying uncertainty, and designing experiments and studies that produce reliable knowledge. Together they equip you for the full breadth of careers where quantitative reasoning is valued. At Southampton this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough technical grounding in mathematics and builds substantial expertise in statistical thinking and method. You will study probability and statistical theory, linear models, time series analysis, and the computational tools used to implement statistical methods in practice, developing the ability to work with data in a rigorous and principled way. Clinical trials, quality control, environmental and medical research, and government statistical work are all areas where the skills you develop are directly applicable. The combination of mathematical depth and statistical competence makes graduates highly sought after by employers who need people capable of working with quantitative evidence and communicating what it means. Graduates move into careers as statisticians and data scientists in manufacturing, pharmaceutical research, environmental science, healthcare, finance, and government. The degree also provides an excellent platform for actuarial careers and for roles in data analytics, machine learning, and scientific research. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in statistics, data science, or mathematics, building specialist expertise that opens doors to senior research and technical roles.
