MBChB Medicine
About this course
Medicine is the study and practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease and injury in human beings. It is one of the most demanding and most rewarding of all degree courses, requiring sustained intellectual effort across the natural sciences, clinical reasoning, and the human skills of communication, empathy, and ethical judgement. Doctors are expected to be both scientists and practitioners, capable of applying complex biological knowledge in real clinical situations while working with patients and colleagues in ways that are compassionate, professional, and safe. At the University of Sheffield, this five-year full-time MBChB programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad as part of its structure, along with substantial work placement hours in clinical settings. Sheffield's medical school is highly regarded, and the programme emphasises learning from patients and from a wide range of clinical settings, developing the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours that good clinical practice requires. You will study the biological sciences underlying medicine, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology, alongside the clinical skills and professional development that prepare you for the wards and clinics where doctors work. Placement throughout the programme means that your learning is consistently grounded in real patient encounters and clinical realities. The year abroad and the sandwich placement structure give you the opportunity to experience medicine in different clinical environments and, potentially, in international settings, broadening your perspective on how healthcare is delivered and organised across different systems. Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for Foundation Programme training in the NHS, beginning a structured postgraduate training pathway that leads to registration and eventually to specialty training in any branch of medicine or general practice. Medicine leads to a lifelong professional career with continuous learning, and Sheffield graduates enter that career well prepared for the demands it places on them.
