MBChB Medicine
About this course
Medicine is the vocation, the science and the practice of caring for people who are ill, injured or in need of preventive care. Becoming a doctor requires not only the acquisition of a substantial body of clinical and scientific knowledge, but also the development of the professional values, communication skills and clinical reasoning that allow that knowledge to be applied humanely and effectively in the care of real patients. Medical education is built on the understanding that science, ethics, professionalism and human connection are all essential. At the University of Keele the MBChB programme delivers an innovative curriculum structured around three themes identified by the General Medical Council: professional values and behaviours, professional skills, and professional knowledge. You will develop the clinical competence and the compassionate orientation that define excellent medical practice across five years of full-time study. The curriculum integrates early clinical contact with patients and communities alongside the foundational biomedical sciences, so that you build clinical reasoning and professional identity from the very beginning of the programme. Medicine graduates qualify to apply for Foundation Programme training, which marks the start of postgraduate medical education and the path towards specialisation in any of the medical or surgical specialties, general practice, public health or academic medicine. The MBChB degree from Keele leads to registration with the General Medical Council on graduation, enabling graduates to practise as doctors in the UK. Medicine remains one of the most valued and demanding professional qualifications, and the breadth of the career opportunities it opens, from hospital medicine and general practice to research, public health and global health, reflects the central importance of the profession.
