BA Modern Languages and History
About this course
Modern languages and history make an intellectually natural pair. Language study gives you direct access to the sources, cultures, and perspectives of other societies; history gives you the frameworks to understand how those societies have changed over time. Together, they develop your ability to read carefully across linguistic and temporal distance, to place events and ideas in their contexts, and to understand how the past shapes the present in ways that cannot be grasped from within a single national tradition. At Leeds the history component covers an ambitious range from the fall of the Roman Empire to the twenty-first century postcolonial world, introducing you to diverse periods, regions, and methodological approaches. The languages element develops high-level proficiency in your chosen language or languages alongside the cultural and literary knowledge that serious language study requires. Integrating the two means your historical thinking is deepened by linguistic access to primary sources, and your language skills are enriched by historical context. The four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you professional experience in a relevant organisation, whether in translation, cultural relations, research, or another field where language and historical knowledge are valued. Graduates are well placed for careers in teaching, academia, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, publishing, research, cultural heritage, and public affairs. The combination of language proficiency and historical analytical skill is particularly valued in careers that involve working across cultural and national boundaries. Many students continue to postgraduate study in history, languages, translation, or international relations.
