BA Modern Languages
About this course
Modern languages at degree level is the study of language as a living system embedded in history, literature, politics, and culture. It is not just about achieving fluency, though that is central, but about developing the analytical and interpretive tools to understand how language shapes thought, how literatures create meaning, and how cultures differ in ways that matter. The ability to function in more than one language is one of the most useful intellectual and professional assets a graduate can have. At Newcastle University this four-year full-time programme allows you to study a combination of languages drawn from the range available, developing proficiency in each alongside a serious engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures they carry. You will read texts in the original languages, study film, history, and cultural analysis, and develop skills in translation, argumentation, and cross-cultural communication. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you both sustained professional experience and genuine immersion in a linguistic and cultural environment different from your own. These are among the most formative elements of a modern languages degree. Newcastle's strong language programmes and its connections across Europe and beyond make it an excellent base for this study. The combination of academic rigour, practical linguistic work, professional experience, and international living experience produces graduates who are distinctive in almost any career context. Graduates go on to careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, publishing, teaching, the civil service, law, and arts organisations. Many continue to postgraduate study in languages, area studies, translation, international relations, or other disciplines where linguistic and cultural competence is an advantage.
