BA Music and Business Management with Year Abroad
About this course
Music and business management at the University of Southampton combines a broad musical education with the commercial and organisational knowledge needed to build a career in the music industry or in businesses where musical understanding is professionally valuable. The music industry is an extraordinarily complex commercial ecosystem, encompassing live performance, recording, publishing, licensing, streaming, artist management, events, education, and a growing range of digital services, and navigating it successfully requires both artistic understanding and business acumen. This four-year full-time degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop both musical and international experience. You will explore a broad music curriculum that spans classical music and jazz, pop and commercial styles, developing your understanding of music as an art form, a cultural practice, and a profession. Business management modules develop your knowledge of how organisations function, how markets operate, and how strategic decisions are made in competitive and uncertain environments. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different musical culture and to gain international performance experience, extending both your musical perspective and your professional formation. A typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points reflects an accessible admissions standard. Graduates from music and business management degrees are well placed for careers in music management, record labels, music publishing, live events production, arts administration, music marketing and PR, streaming and digital music platforms, music education, and a range of other roles in the creative industries where both musical knowledge and commercial understanding are assets. Many continue to postgraduate study in music, arts management, or business.
