Music and sound for screen is a specialist creative discipline concerned with how audio, in all its forms, shapes the experience of watching film, television, documentary, and interactive media. From orchestral scores and sound design for blockbuster cinema to music supervision, dialogue editing, and Foley work in broadcast television and games, the range of practice within the field is broad. What unites it is the craft knowledge of how sound works psychologically and emotionally in combination with moving images, and the technical competence to realise sound visions within the constraints of professional production. At Huddersfield, which has one of the UK's strongest traditions in music technology and experimental music, this three-year full-time degree develops your compositional, production, and technical skills in the specific context of screen. You will learn to score for picture, to use industry-standard digital audio workstations and post-production tools, and to understand the workflows and professional conventions of screen production. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional audio or post-production environment before your final year, which is often where professional networks are built and where the transition from student to practitioner begins. Work placement activity is embedded throughout. Graduates work in film and television post-production, as composers for screen, as music supervisors and clearance specialists, as sound editors and sound designers, and in the rapidly growing interactive media and games sector. Freelance work is the norm for many in this field, making the industry connections and portfolio you build during the degree particularly important. The sandwich year experience is often decisive in securing graduate employment.
