BA Music: Creative Music Technology
About this course
Creative music technology brings together musical talent and the technical knowledge of music production in a way that reflects how most music is actually made in the contemporary world. The recording studio is no longer simply a place where performances are captured; it is a creative environment in its own right, where producers, engineers, and artists collaborate to construct sounds, textures, and arrangements that could not exist outside the recorded medium. Understanding both the musical and the technical dimensions of this process is what distinguishes a graduate who can work creatively and critically in professional production contexts. At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time degree develops your existing musical ability alongside an in-depth knowledge of music production hardware and software. You will record and produce music and sound for bands and ensembles, create your own studio-based compositions, and work across a range of media including film, radio, and games. You will develop proficiency in digital audio workstations, signal processing, mixing, mastering, and sound design, alongside the musical knowledge needed to make informed creative decisions. A year abroad is available, broadening your perspective and giving you experience of music production in a different cultural and professional context. Salford's location in Greater Manchester, a city with a significant music industry presence and a history of important popular music, provides a context that enriches both the academic and practical dimensions of the degree. Graduates work as music producers, recording and mixing engineers, sound designers, composers for media, music technology educators, and in music supervision and post-production. The combination of musical understanding and technical skill is valued across the recorded music industry, broadcast and film, games, and the live events sector. Many graduates also build independent creative practices or develop careers as artist-producers.
