BA Music with Musical Theatre
About this course
Music with Musical Theatre is a degree designed for performers who want to develop their voice within the specific demands of the musical theatre style without following the broader dance and acting training that a full musical theatre programme requires. It sits at the intersection of music and theatre, taking seriously both the vocal and musical craft that strong performance demands and the dramatic context in which that craft is applied. Musical theatre is one of the most technically demanding forms of singing, requiring control, range, characterisation, and the ability to sustain performance across extended material. At the University of Chichester you will study music as a discipline in its own right, developing your musicianship, theoretical understanding, and analytical skills, while also specialising in musical theatre vocal performance. You will work on repertoire from across the history of the musical, explore the relationship between text, character, and sung performance, and develop your voice within a context that values both musical integrity and theatrical effectiveness. The three-year, full-time programme trains you to work professionally in an area that demands both musical knowledge and performative skill. Graduates from this programme are prepared for careers in musical theatre performance, whether in professional theatre, touring productions, cabaret, cruise entertainment, or related performing arts contexts. The broader music training also opens routes into music education, community music, music direction, vocal coaching, and arts administration. Some graduates continue into postgraduate study in performance, voice, or music education, developing specialist expertise for teaching or advanced performance careers. The combination of disciplinary musical knowledge with practical performance skills makes graduates adaptable across the wider creative and education sectors.
