BSc Nursing (Child)
About this course
Children's nursing is a distinctive branch of the nursing profession that focuses on the care of infants, children, and young people from birth through adolescence. It recognises that children are not simply small adults: they have different physiological responses, different communication needs, different developmental stages, and different relationships with family and carers that must all be taken into account in providing safe, effective, and compassionate care. Children's nurses work across a wide range of settings, from neonatal units and children's wards to community health services, schools, and specialist children's centres. At Huddersfield this three-year full-time programme prepares you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a children's nurse. You will study the physical and psychological development of children, the conditions and presentations common in paediatric settings, and the family-centred approach to care that children's nursing demands. Practice placements take you into real clinical environments where you work with children and their families under the supervision of registered practitioners, building the clinical competence and professional judgment that the role requires. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. On qualifying, children's nurses work in NHS trusts, children's hospices, community health services, schools, and independent healthcare settings. Career progression routes include specialist practice in areas such as neonatal care, paediatric oncology, emergency nursing, and children's mental health, as well as leadership, education, and advanced practice roles. The profession offers genuine job satisfaction and strong employment rates, and the skills developed in children's nursing are valued across all areas of healthcare that involve working with vulnerable and developing populations.
