MSci Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the clinical discipline concerned with the assessment and treatment of patients in urgent and emergency situations, often in uncontrolled and unpredictable environments before they can reach definitive care. The role of the paramedic has evolved substantially over recent decades, expanding from a primarily transport-focused function to a highly autonomous clinical profession with significant responsibility for diagnosis, treatment, and triage. Paramedics work across a wide range of settings, from emergency ambulance responses to urgent treatment centres, primary care, and specialist retrieval services. At Keele University, this four-year full-time Paramedic Science degree is delivered by a department that positions itself at the forefront of paramedic science education in the UK. You will develop the hands-on practical experience and rigorous academic preparation needed to excel in providing care to people at their most vulnerable. The programme develops clinical knowledge across emergency medicine, pharmacology, patient assessment, trauma care, and the management of complex and time-critical conditions, alongside the professional values and resilience needed to practise effectively in fast-paced environments. The entry tariff is 136 points. Completion of an approved paramedic science degree and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council are the standard route to professional practice as a paramedic. Career destinations span NHS ambulance services, air ambulance and helicopter emergency services, primary care roles, urgent treatment centres, and specialist critical care and retrieval services. The Keele programme prepares you for the expanding scope of paramedic practice, including advanced clinical roles, independent prescribing, and leadership positions. Postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, emergency medicine, or leadership is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
