About this course

Philosophy and Psychology is a combination that brings together two disciplines with a shared fascination with the human mind and how it works. Philosophy approaches fundamental questions about thought, knowledge, consciousness, free will and moral reasoning through careful conceptual analysis and argument, asking what we can actually know and how we should think about the nature of mental life. Psychology examines the same territory empirically, investigating how people perceive, remember, decide, feel and interact using the methods of experimental science. Together, the two perspectives illuminate what each alone cannot fully explain. At the University of Aberdeen this four-year full-time degree takes you on an intellectually rich journey through some of the most fundamental questions available to any student, developing both the rigour of philosophical argument and the hands-on skills of psychological research. You will engage with the big questions of human existence from both theoretical and empirical angles, learning to construct and evaluate arguments with precision while also designing experiments, collecting data and interpreting results. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your studies in an international academic environment. Graduates from Philosophy and Psychology degrees are well equipped for careers that involve working with people, thinking critically about complex problems and communicating clearly. Many go on to postgraduate study in clinical or counselling psychology, eventually working as practitioner psychologists. Others find roles in human resources, research, education, healthcare management, social policy and user experience design. The combination of philosophical training and psychological understanding is particularly valued in leadership and consultancy contexts. Postgraduate study in psychology, philosophy, cognitive science or related fields is a natural continuation for those wishing to develop their expertise further.
