BSc Physical Geography with a Year of Study Abroad
About this course
Physical geography examines the processes that shape the natural world, from the movement of glaciers and river systems to the forces driving climate, coastal change, and soil formation. It is a discipline that combines scientific rigour with real-world relevance, addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing society today, including flooding, erosion, sea-level rise, and the longer-term effects of a changing climate. At Cardiff University, this three-year, full-time programme is built around the understanding that our planet is constantly evolving, and that reading its physical processes demands both analytical skill and direct field observation. You will study geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, biogeography, and environmental hazards, developing a strong scientific literacy in the processes that govern the earth's surface and atmosphere. The programme places particular emphasis on fieldwork and data analysis, equipping you to collect and interpret environmental evidence, use geographical information systems, and communicate findings to a range of audiences. By studying with a year of study abroad built into the degree, you will encounter physical environments and academic perspectives beyond the UK, deepening your understanding of global processes and broadening your outlook as a geographer. The skills developed through physical geography are widely transferable and directly relevant to a range of careers. Graduates commonly move into environmental consultancy, natural hazard assessment, land use planning, hydrology, and conservation, as well as public sector roles in environmental agencies and local authorities. Research careers and postgraduate study in geography, earth system science, climate science, or environmental management are also well-trodden routes. For those who want to understand how the natural world works and contribute to solving the environmental challenges of the coming decades, physical geography provides a thorough and purposeful training.
