Physics is the fundamental science, addressing the deepest questions about what the universe is made of, how it behaves, and why the laws it follows have the character they do. At Royal Holloway, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, making it one of the most comprehensively supported physics degrees available in the UK. The sandwich year and placements give you professional experience in physics-related roles before you graduate, and the year abroad allows you to study at a partner institution in another country, exposing you to different research cultures and scientific traditions. You will study the full core of physics, from classical mechanics and electromagnetism through quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and condensed matter, to specialist topics in particle physics, astrophysics, or other areas of modern physics. The programme combines rigorous theoretical training with laboratory skills and computational methods. Graduates from physics programmes go on to careers in research, data science, finance, technology, defence, healthcare, education, and many other fields. The quantitative training physics provides is among the most valued by employers across every sector, and the intellectual rigour of the discipline prepares you for almost any analytical challenge.
