About this course

Physiotherapy is an Allied Health Profession that uses physical approaches, including exercise, manual therapy, electrotherapy, and patient education, to help people recover from injury or illness, manage long-term conditions, and optimise their physical function and independence. Physiotherapists work across an enormous range of settings: hospital wards and intensive care units, outpatient musculoskeletal clinics, community rehabilitation services, sports medicine, mental health teams, and domiciliary care. The profession demands both scientific knowledge of the body and the interpersonal skills to help patients engage with their own recovery. At Northumbria University, this three-year full-time programme is approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council on graduation. You will study anatomy, physiology, and the pathophysiology of the conditions physiotherapists treat alongside the assessment and treatment skills that constitute professional practice. Clinical placements in NHS and other healthcare settings form a major part of the programme, giving you supervised hands-on experience from early in the degree. Evidence-based practice, critical appraisal, and research skills are developed throughout. Physiotherapy graduates register with the HCPC and begin their careers as newly qualified physiotherapists. The NHS is the largest employer, with roles in hospitals, community services, mental health, and specialist units. Private practice, sports medicine, occupational health, armed forces physiotherapy, and international work are further options. The profession is consistently listed among the most satisfying healthcare careers, combining scientific expertise with direct patient relationships. Many physiotherapists go on to postgraduate study in clinical specialisms such as musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, or sports physiotherapy, and an advanced clinical practice or research career is a natural progression for those who wish to develop further.
