BA Primary Education Studies (Non QTS Accelerated Degree)
About this course
Primary Education Studies is a degree that examines how children in the primary years learn, develop, and experience schooling, engaging with the theory and research that underpins effective primary education. It addresses pedagogy, child development, curriculum design, educational policy, and the social contexts in which learning takes place. Unlike a teacher training qualification, Education Studies is an academic discipline in its own right, developing critical thinkers who understand education as a social phenomenon as well as a professional practice. At the University of Huddersfield, this accelerated degree runs across two years of intensive full-time study rather than the standard three, allowing you to complete your undergraduate qualification more quickly. The programme does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status, making it distinct from initial teacher education. You will study child development, inclusive education, curriculum and assessment, educational policy, and research methods, developing the analytical skills to engage critically with debates about what primary education is for and how it works in practice. Graduates from Primary Education Studies pursue a range of careers in and around education. Many go on to further study, including postgraduate initial teacher training routes such as the PGCE, which leads to Qualified Teacher Status and a career as a primary school teacher. Others work in educational support roles, learning support assistance, educational psychology support services, early years provision, community education, and school administration. The accelerated two-year format means you reach the job market or postgraduate study more quickly than a conventional three-year degree. Roles in education research, policy, publishing, and the wider children's workforce are also open to graduates with this academic background.
