MSci Psychology and Neuroscience
About this course
Psychology and neuroscience together address some of the most profound questions about the nature of mind and behaviour. Psychology approaches the study of mental life through behaviour, cognition, emotion, and social interaction, drawing on experimental methods to understand why people think, feel, and act the way they do. Neuroscience goes deeper into the biological substrate, examining how the nervous system functions at the cellular, synaptic, and systems level to produce the psychological phenomena we observe. Combining them gives you both the theoretical richness of psychology and the mechanistic grounding of neuroscience. At Bristol, which has outstanding research reputations in both psychology and neuroscience, this four-year full-time degree equips you with critical, theoretical, and practical skills from both disciplines. You will develop an empirical approach to studying the nervous system, mind, and behaviour, learning to use the methods of experimental psychology alongside the cellular and molecular techniques of neuroscience. The programme encourages you to explore and combine these different perspectives, developing an integrated understanding of how brain function gives rise to psychological experience. Bristol's research environment means you engage with cutting-edge science from the outset, and the four-year structure gives additional depth and time for developing that expertise. Graduates are well placed for careers in research, clinical psychology, neuroscience, pharmaceutical development, healthcare, science communication, and many other fields where understanding of the brain and behaviour is valued. Many go on to postgraduate study in psychology, neuroscience, or clinical neuropsychology, pursuing research degrees or professional training as clinical or neuropsychologists. The combination of scientific rigour and psychological depth that the degree develops is sought after by employers in academic, clinical, and commercial research settings.
