Psychology is the scientific study of mind, brain, and behaviour, investigating how people perceive, think, feel, learn, develop, and relate to one another. It is one of the broadest disciplines in higher education, drawing on biology, statistics, philosophy, neuroscience, and the social sciences to address questions that range from the mechanisms of memory to the dynamics of prejudice, from the development of children to the treatment of mental illness. Studying psychology gives you a rigorous empirical training alongside a genuinely rich engagement with what it means to be human. At the University of Durham, this three-year full-time degree provides a British Psychological Society-accredited route to graduate membership of the Society, the standard foundation for professional practice and postgraduate study in psychology in the UK. You will study the core areas of psychological science, including cognitive psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, individual differences, and research methods, building both theoretical understanding and practical research skills. A sandwich year in industry and a year abroad are both available, as are work placements, giving you the opportunity to apply your psychological knowledge in professional settings and to develop an international perspective on the discipline before you graduate. Graduates pursue careers in clinical and health psychology, educational psychology, occupational and organisational psychology, forensic psychology, mental health services, human resources, marketing, user research, social work, and research. The BPS accreditation means graduates can progress directly to postgraduate training in applied psychology specialisms, including the clinical psychology doctorate. Many also continue to research degrees, deepening their expertise in a specific area of psychological science.
