BSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition
About this course
Sport and exercise nutrition applies the science of nutrition to the specific demands of physical performance, recovery, and health across the full spectrum from recreational participation to elite sport. It is a discipline that draws on physiology, biochemistry, and sports science to answer increasingly precise questions: what should athletes eat, when should they eat it, and how does dietary strategy interact with training load to determine performance, adaptation, and health? The answers have implications not just for elite athletes but for anyone who exercises, and the field is growing rapidly. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme fuses cutting-edge science with practical application, developing your ability to work with athletes and active individuals to optimise their health, fuel performance, and enhance recovery. You will study human physiology, macronutrient and micronutrient biochemistry, energy metabolism, fluid balance, body composition, and the psychological dimensions of eating and performance. You will also develop the practical skills to assess nutritional status, design dietary strategies, and communicate nutritional advice in professional contexts. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, providing an unusually rich combination of professional and international experience that prepares you well for the demands of the sector. Graduates from sport and exercise nutrition programmes work with professional sports teams, national governing bodies, sports medicine clinics, public health organisations, the food industry, and private practice. Roles include sport and exercise nutritionist, performance nutritionist, nutritionist with sport science teams, and researcher. Further study at postgraduate level, including routes toward registration as a registered nutritionist or dietitian, is available for those who wish to develop clinical or research expertise.
