BSc Sport Coaching and Physical Education
About this course
Sport coaching and physical education sit at the point where the science of physical performance meets the practice of teaching and developing human beings. Coaching requires you to understand physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology well enough to plan effective training programmes and make real-time interventions that help athletes improve. Physical education requires you to understand how children and young people learn physical skills, how to design lessons that develop the whole person, and how to work inclusively with diverse groups. At Anglia Ruskin University, this four-year full-time programme takes a rigorous approach to both dimensions, using specialist labs accredited by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES) to develop your physiological and scientific knowledge alongside the practical coaching and pedagogical training the degree requires. You will study sport development, exercise physiology, and the psychology of coaching, while also developing practical skills and gaining safeguarding and coaching qualifications that are directly useful in professional contexts. Work with real schools and sports clubs is part of the programme, giving you hands-on experience in the settings where sport coaches and PE teachers actually work. The four-year structure gives you time to develop genuine depth in both the academic content and the practical competencies, and the professional qualifications you accumulate alongside the degree add direct value to your employment profile. Graduates move into careers as sport coaches, PE teachers (typically following a PGCE), sport development officers, strength and conditioning coaches, personal trainers, and practitioners working with sports clubs, national governing bodies, schools, and community organisations. Some move into sports analysis, elite sport performance environments, or management roles within sport. The strong practical and scientific grounding of the degree makes graduates valued across the full range of sport and education settings.
