BSc Sport with a Foundation Year
About this course
Sport as an academic subject at Loughborough University draws on the university's remarkable position in British sporting life. Loughborough has produced more Olympic and Paralympic medal winners per capita than any other UK university, and its culture of high-performance sport informs the academic programmes it offers. The Sport degree provides an intellectually rigorous engagement with sport as a social, cultural, economic and political phenomenon, alongside the practical and scientific dimensions of sporting performance. The four-year full-time programme with foundation year is specifically designed for students who are performing at a very high standard in their sport but do not have the required academic qualifications, often because of the demands of elite training and competition. The foundation year provides the academic preparation needed to progress onto the full degree, recognising that exceptional sporting talent can coincide with limited conventional academic preparation. You will study the social and cultural dimensions of sport, sports management and governance, the history and politics of sport, sport marketing and communications, and the relationship between sport, media and commercial interests. Loughborough's combination of elite sporting culture and academic rigour makes it a distinctive environment in which to examine what sport means, how it is organised and what its broader social effects are. Graduates work in sports administration and management, national governing bodies, professional clubs, sports marketing, events management, media and broadcasting, sport development, the civil service and international sporting organisations such as the International Olympic Committee. Postgraduate study in sport management, sports law, events management or related fields is a natural continuation for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
