BSc Sustainability and Environmental Management
About this course
Sustainability and environmental management addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing societies today. From the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of soils and freshwater systems to the management of waste streams and the transition to lower-carbon economies, these problems require professionals who can think across scientific disciplines and engage with the social, economic, and political dimensions of environmental change. The field brings together ecology, earth science, geography, and policy analysis, and demands people who can work comfortably with data, fieldwork, and stakeholder communication alike. This three-year full-time degree at Keele gives you a grounding in the natural systems that underpin environmental challenges as well as the management frameworks and policy contexts in which solutions must be designed and implemented. You will carry out fieldwork, gaining direct experience of ecological surveying and environmental assessment in real landscapes, and work in laboratories developing analytical skills relevant to water quality, soil science, and habitat evaluation. The programme includes a year abroad, which extends your understanding of how different countries approach sustainability challenges and broadens the professional and cultural perspectives you bring to the field. The career destinations open to graduates are wide and growing. Environmental consultancies employ sustainability specialists to conduct impact assessments, prepare planning reports, and advise clients on regulatory compliance. Conservation organisations, local authorities, and national agencies recruit graduates for roles in nature recovery, green infrastructure planning, and habitat management. The corporate sector has a growing demand for sustainability professionals who can advise on reporting frameworks, supply chain analysis, and environmental risk management. Roles in policy, international development, and research are also well-established paths. Postgraduate study in environmental science, conservation biology, climate change, or environmental law can sharpen specialist knowledge for those who wish to pursue technical or academic careers.
