About this course

Earth sciences is the study of the planet we live on: its physical structure, its chemical composition, the processes that shape its surface and interior, and its history over billions of years. It is an inherently interdisciplinary field, drawing on geology, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, and geography to understand natural systems of extraordinary complexity. And it has never been more relevant, as questions about climate change, sustainable energy, natural hazards, mineral resources, and the long-term habitability of the planet all require the kind of deep Earth understanding that this discipline provides. At the University of Derby, this four-year full-time degree is a genuinely multi-disciplinary programme that combines science with humanity-based disciplines including biology, chemistry, geography, geology, geochemistry, natural and environmental sciences, and physics. A foundation year provides the scientific and academic preparation needed before moving into the main degree content, making the programme accessible to students who are motivated and intellectually curious but may not yet have all the science background the degree eventually demands. A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience in an earth sciences or environmental context, and work placement activity is integrated throughout. A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies. You will develop skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, mapping, and scientific communication, all of which are directly relevant to careers in the earth sciences sector. The programme's broad disciplinary coverage means you develop versatility alongside depth. Graduates go on to work in energy, mining and minerals, environmental consultancy, hydrogeology, civil engineering, environmental monitoring, and government agencies. Many also pursue postgraduate study in geology, geophysics, environmental science, or related fields, particularly those aiming at research or specialist professional roles.
