BA Education, Childhood and Culture
About this course
Education, childhood, and culture is a degree that examines one of the most important and contested areas of social life: how children learn, develop, and are shaped by the societies and cultures into which they are born. It brings together educational theory, developmental psychology, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies to ask fundamental questions about childhood itself, including how it is defined, how it varies across cultures and historical periods, and how institutions, families, and communities support or hinder children's flourishing. It is a degree for people who are curious about how learning happens, why educational systems take the forms they do, and what childhood means in different cultural contexts. At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme takes an interdisciplinary approach that draws on UEA's strengths across the social sciences and humanities. You will study the history and philosophy of education, theories of child development, the sociology of schooling and inequality, comparative and international education, and the cultural and media contexts in which children grow up. The degree does not lead directly to qualified teacher status, but it provides an exceptionally strong intellectual foundation for those who want to work with children and young people, research education, or influence policy. UEA's location in Norwich and its strong research culture in education and childhood studies means you will engage with current debates about pedagogy, child welfare, and the future of education in an environment that takes these questions seriously. Graduates of education, childhood, and culture degrees move into a wide range of careers, including work in schools, early years settings, social care, youth work, community development, charities and NGOs, educational publishing, journalism, and policy. Many graduates also progress to postgraduate study, including PGCE programmes for those who wish to qualify as teachers, or master's and doctoral research in education, childhood studies, or related fields.
