LLB Law
About this course
Law is a discipline of fundamental importance to every society, providing the frameworks through which rights are defined and protected, disputes are resolved, power is constrained and social order is maintained. Studying law at degree level develops not only knowledge of legal rules and systems but the intellectual capacities that make lawyers effective: the ability to read and interpret complex texts precisely, to reason from principles to conclusions, to construct well-structured arguments and to communicate with clarity under pressure. At Sussex, this three-year programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most comprehensively structured law degrees available. The foundation year provides an accessible entry route that is particularly suited to students who need additional academic preparation. The main LLB provides a comprehensive foundation in English law, covering the core areas of contract, tort, public law, criminal law and equity, while also engaging with international, European and comparative legal systems. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study law in another jurisdiction, which is particularly valuable for developing the global perspective that is increasingly important in legal practice. Sussex's commitment to developing a global perspective reflects the realities of modern legal practice, where cross-border transactions, international arbitration and global regulatory frameworks are routine features of legal work. Graduates are well placed for professional legal training as solicitors or barristers, and also for careers in the civil service, financial services, compliance, management consulting, journalism, international organisations and public policy. Postgraduate study in law, including the LLM, is a natural option.
