BSc Media and Communication
About this course
Media and Communication is the study of how information, culture and meaning are produced, distributed and received in a world saturated by images, messages and networked interaction. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of technology, culture, politics and society, asking how media systems work, what effects they have, and how they shape the exercise of power and influence in contemporary life. Understanding media and communication requires both theoretical rigour and analytical attention to the specific forms and platforms through which media operates. At Loughborough University, this four-year full-time degree takes a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on social science, cultural theory and quantitative research methods to examine media and communication across a range of dimensions. You will study the political economy of media industries, the sociology of news and public discourse, the history and theory of digital media, audience research, and the role of communication in organisations and public life. Loughborough's scientific and social science orientation brings a distinctive analytical rigour to the programme, and a year abroad gives you the opportunity to encounter media and communication from a comparative international perspective. Graduates of Media and Communication programmes move into a wide range of careers in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications consultancy, research, policy, broadcasting, digital media, and the public and charitable sectors. The analytical skills the degree develops, particularly the ability to evaluate evidence about how media works and to communicate findings clearly, are valued across many professional contexts. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in media, communications, sociology, or journalism, and some move into academic research.
