BSc Paramedic Practice
About this course
Paramedic practice is a healthcare profession concerned with the assessment, treatment, and transportation of patients in emergency and urgent care settings. Paramedics are highly trained clinical practitioners who work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams, making rapid and often complex decisions under pressure in pre-hospital environments. The role demands a combination of clinical knowledge, practical skill, critical thinking, and the communication abilities needed to support patients and their families in situations that are frequently frightening and uncertain. At Teesside University, this three-year full-time degree develops your clinical competence and professional judgement through an integrated approach to academic and practice learning. You will explore evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, and the research and audit methods that underpin high-quality paramedic care. The programme develops your skills in formulating clinical questions, searching and evaluating evidence, and applying that evidence to your clinical decision-making in real patient encounters. You will also gain the technical and procedural skills required for paramedic practice, developed through simulation and placement experience in real ambulance service and clinical settings. Graduates from paramedic programmes are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and can work in NHS ambulance services, private and voluntary ambulance providers, event medical services, and primary care environments. Career progression within the ambulance service includes advanced practitioner roles, critical care paramedic positions, and management. Many paramedics also go on to work as specialist practitioners in emergency departments, urgent care centres, or air ambulance services. Postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, emergency care, or public health is available for those who want to deepen their expertise.
