BA Primary Education with QTS
About this course
Primary education is one of the most consequential and demanding professions in any society. Primary teachers shape the formative years of children's intellectual and social development, introducing them to the foundations of literacy, numeracy, and an understanding of the world, as well as to the habits of curiosity, collaboration, and resilience that learning at its best instils. A degree leading to Qualified Teacher Status combines deep understanding of how children learn with the curriculum knowledge, pedagogical skill, and professional capability that effective teaching requires. At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time programme leads to QTS, qualifying you to teach in primary schools in England. The first year introduces you to practice across the full primary curriculum and the 3 to 11 age range. In the second and third years, you focus on the 5 to 11 phase, developing your ability to teach the national curriculum with depth and confidence in a specific subject. The programme includes work placements in schools throughout, giving you sustained classroom experience that is integrated with your academic study rather than tacked on at the end. Topics covered include leadership, additional educational needs, early years, and the critical exploration of artificial intelligence as a teaching and learning tool, ensuring that you understand the rapidly changing environment into which you will be entering as a newly qualified teacher. You will develop as a reflective practitioner, learning to observe children carefully, to plan purposeful lessons, to manage a classroom with confidence, and to respond thoughtfully to the diverse needs of your pupils. Graduates go directly into teaching in state and independent primary schools. Career development routes include subject leadership, special educational needs coordination, early years leadership, middle and senior leadership, and eventually headship. Postgraduate study in education, including master's-level programmes, is also a well-established path.
