About this course
Theoretical physics is the most mathematically demanding branch of the physical sciences, and it addresses the deepest questions we can ask about the structure of reality. Where experimental physics tests hypotheses against the results of measurement, theoretical physics builds the mathematical frameworks that give those results meaning, and predicts new phenomena before experiments can detect them. From quantum field theory and general relativity to string theory and cosmology, theoretical physics pushes at the limits of what can be known about the universe and how it works. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is pitched at students with both high mathematical ability and genuine intellectual ambition. You will study physics from the domain of elementary particles through nuclear and atomic physics to condensed matter and cosmology, developing the mathematical tools that each of these domains requires. The programme goes far beyond the standard undergraduate physics curriculum, engaging with the formal structures of classical and quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, quantum field theory, and general relativity at a level of mathematical rigour that prepares you for postgraduate research. The year abroad gives you experience in another research-active environment, broadening your scientific perspective and often forming connections that prove significant in a research career.
